Ritual 1 Whispering Smoke
Ritual 1: Whispering Smoke at soundPEDRO 2023
Whispering Smoke is a site-specific installation that uses an old gaurd outpost at the Angel’s Gate cultural center as a make-shift confessional. Participants write an intention on a piece of paper—this can be either something they wish to bring into their life or let go of—then burn it in a small charcoal recepticle. Above it an inverted cup contains a sensor that will respond to their intention and smoke by creating a sonic representation of their intention.
Ritual 2 Collective Cooking
Collective Cooking is an interactive installation and performance that allows the audence to affect the performance. Part of the purpose of our Rituals series is to show that seemingly everyday or mundane objects devoid of inherent meaning can become ritualized objects that start to have a purpose by saying it does. In this case, we wrapped an object in twine and yarn and suspended it from the ceiling with strands reaching out to the sides of the wall. The object has contact mics built into it and was fed into an efect with responsive parameters. We composed a piece made up of transitions that represented the constant state of change: while things may seem like they are static, a metamorphosis is constatnly happening at various levels and at various speeds.
